Choosing the Best Materials For Your Future Picture Rail Project

Once you've chosen your materials, measure the space where you want your rail to go and make a sketch or drawing of the shape it will take. You'll also want to decide on the height of your rail and the size of the pictures that will be attached to it.

Now is a good time to get quotes from several contractors to see who can offer the best price and quality for your project. Once you have quotes, decide which contractor to choose and start planning your project!

How to measure for your new picture rail

Picture rails at have become increasingly popular in recent years as a way to add an extra layer of decor to any room. While there are many different types of picture rails available, measuring for one is important to ensure that it fits properly in your space. Here are four tips to help you measure for your new rail:

1. Use a ruler or a straight edge to draw a line across the width of the wall where you want the rail to go. This will help you determine the correct length of rail necessary.

2. Measure the height of the wall from the floor to the top of the rail. This will give you an idea of how high the rail should be mounted.

3. Measure the depth of the wall from front to back. This will help you determine how wide the rail should be.

4. Add 1 inch (2.5 cm) to each measurement for a finished rail size that is 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide and 12-inches (30 cm) long on average. If you want your floor to be 4 feet (1.2 m) wide, for example, you would need a rail size of 6-inches (15 cm) wide.

The height should be 3-1/2 inches (8.5 cm) for any room at least 4 feet 9 inches (1.4 m) high. If the height is less than 3-1/2 inches (8.5 cm), the rail will not only appear shorter when mounted, but it also can cause rail joints to sag or bulge and could damage your flooring if it rubs against screws and fasteners as you walk on it.
